Food, glorious food! Here is everywhere I ate in London last month - from one of the best pasta dishes I’ve ever tried in London, to a fancy bakery in Chelsea, to a good old carvery, there’s a recommendation for whatever you fancy this month!
Manteca, Shoreditch
I have been wanting to go to Manteca for YEARS, purely for that fact that every single Tuesday evening I walk past it on my way home from my weekly circus class, and every time, without fail, there is a queue out the door. I’ve always wondered what the fuss is about and so we finally booked a table for our wedding anniversary. Manteca serve up Italian cuisine with a focus on sharing plates. They have 7 categories of food on their menu; salami + meat cuts, nibbles, small plates, pasta, big plates, sides and dessert, and they recommend 5-7 plates per couple to share.
What to order: The menu changes often, but there are two standout dishes to me, everything else was just okay. If it’s on the menu, you have to order the Beef Battuta - a type of beef tartare with burnt onion emulsion and beef fat crumb - absolutely delicious. Secondly, the Mafaldine pasta with hogget ragu and preserved artichokes, I could have just eaten this all night and been happy! We did also share the small John Dory which was tasty but pricey at £28 for 300g of fish. I would actually love to come back here just to try more of their pasta dishes and skip everything else - it was perfectly cooked and had that homemade pasta texture which is just divine!
Quality Wines, Farringdon
You may have heard of Quality Chop House in Farringdon? It’s a cult status restaurant who also have a sister restaurant next door called Quality Wines - a wine bar come restaurant with a weekly changing menu of mediterane inspired dishes. We went for lunch, where they offer 2 courses for £29 or 3 for £35. The vibe here was nice but honestly, the food didn’t blow me away so I’m not sure I’d run back anytime soon!
What to order: Highlight for me was the Salame Rosa & Butter Panino - apparently that only make 20 of these per day and it’s definitely worth a try - layers of mortadella in a butter brioche roll with mayo - it’s so good! WE had the Soupe de Poisson which was too fishy for me (saying something because I’m usually a big lobster bisque/fish soup fan).
Cheese Mongers, Sloane Square
G and I are self confessed Cheese toastie fiends (if you’ve seen our cheese toastie competition on Youtube, you’ll know!). We went for a coffee down Pavillion Road near Cadogan Gardens, one of our favourite streets in London and spotted that London Cheesemongers were serving up a Cheese toastie for £10 which we decided to share. It was nice! Crunchy bread, melted cheese with sharp pickles with a good bite to perfectly compliment the richness of the cheese.
