Everywhere I ate in May
Where to eat in London and what to order... pizza, lobster and michllein star greek food edition.
May was a super sociable month for me, I had some lovely catch ups with friends and family over tasty food and also a couple of fancy dinner and brunch dates with G. Here’s every London restaurant I had the pleasure of dining at (yes, even the Wetherspoons) and what to order if you visit yourself!
Sodo, Walthamstow and Bethnal Green, ££
If you’re after somewhere super chilled to go for a date night or catch up with a friend, that also serves a decent negroni, nice wine and delicious pizza, Sodo is your place! They have 4 branches in London and last month I went to two of them and would recommend them a lot!
What to order: Both times I went last month I had the Wicker Man pizza which is so damn good - pepperoni, nduja, mascarpone and chilli honey, it’s the perfect balance between sweet and spicy. I can also recommend the pickled cucumbers - crunchy and tangy on a bed of tahini - so good!
Fallow, Piccadilly, £££
I’ve wanted to go to Fallow for years and so we finally got around to booking a table as a brunch celebration the weekend of our wedding anniversary.
What to order: I had the Fallow Croissant Royale - sausage patty, cheese, bacon, egg and walnut ketchup in a brioche type, croissant bun which heavenly but also super dirty - it took a while to recover after eating it 😅 The coffee was great and the £7 hash browns were also worth an order!
Oma, Borough Market, ££££
The first greek restaurant in London with a michellin star, Oma whip up small (and larger clay pot plates) to share - this might be one of my favourite dining experiences of the year so far. The restaurant itself was heaving on the day, but we still felt looked after by the staff and left feeling so satisfied. The main reason we went here was because Grace Dent loves it (and we love her) and also because of Oma’s deconstructed spanakopita gratin served with malawach bread - a must order if you book a table!
What to order: Firstly, the dish that really impressed me was the charred lamb belly on humous, with shallot, mint and pomegranate - super fresh and delicious. Another surprise was the oxtail orzo with bone marrow and beef fat - you’d expect this to be super heavy and rich but it was so tasty and moorish. I would skip the babaghanoush - it was super intense and smokey which I usually love but I just felt it overpowered the aubergine in this case!
Rudys, Liverpool Street, ££
Another pizza recommendation, this time near Liverpool Street. We booked this for a double date catch up with friends and had quite strict requirements of the area we could dine in and also with decent vegan options.
What to order: I had the Capricciosa pizza which was soooo good - prosciutto, olives, mushrooms and artichoke hearts - super tasty. I had an affogato for dessert (vanilla gelato with a shot of espresso) and G had the tiramisu which he said was great!
Burger and Lobster, High Street Kensington, ££
A trip to Burger and Lobster is every bit as indulgent as it sounds and it’s great fun when there’s a group of you to enjoy fizz and fresh lobster (and even some caviar if it’s a special occasion). I was invited to their new West London branch where I had one of the best cocktails I’ve had in London (the verde Vortex, complete with chilli liqueur, tequila, yuzu and pineapple) alongside multiple plates of mouth-watering food.
What to order: There’s a great set menu available (2 courses for £20) in which I’d recommend the lobster or Wagyu beef croquettes to start, but for mains you can’t go wrong with the Lobster Roll or the Beast Burger (beef patties, lobster meat, brie and slaw, it’s unreal).
Wetherspoons, Canary Wharf, £
I’m not going to lie, I LOVE a Wetherspoons! Maybe it’s because I’m an Essex girl at heart or maybe it’s because I love an affordable meal, but I’m always happy to visit a spoons. I went with my family for a light lunch and had a Jacket Potato with beans and a side of peas (and let’s not forget the refillable tea).
What to order: My usual order is either ham, egg and chips OR the Southern Fried chicken strips with bbq sauce. I just think Wetherspoons chips are elite!
The Good Egg, Walthamstow, ££
G and I love the Good Egg in Stoke Newginton (see my Stokey guide here) so we were very excited to see they’d opened a branch in Walthamstow in the space that Eat17 Restaurant used to be.
What to order: I tried one of their brand new dishes - a ZFC (zatar fried chicken) pita, stuffed with pickled slaw and mayo and really enjoyed it! I also can’t visit and not order the humous, so we shared that with some of their crispy bagel chips too!
Leydi, Farringdon, £££
I was invited to Turkish restaurant called Leydi to celebrate a collaboration between them and the Turkish olive oil brand Joila created by Melisa (who you might recognise from Instagram). This restaurant is beautiful, just so instagrammable with it’s baby pink gallery walls and the food is fantastic too - I really want to go back and take G next time!
What to order: The Meze menu is just all delicious - hummus, cacik and the smoked aubergine were all great (especially with the potato crisps or Turkish bread to dip. For main, omg the chicken shish was unreal and really tasted like it’d been grilled on a bbq. I also loved the Imam Bayildi - slow coked stuffed aubergine with vegetables was a real surprise and star of the show.
I feel so lucky to have eaten at so many incredible restaurants over the last month, I hope this has given you some recommendations of where to eat and what to order!
Lots of love! x
